On Shepherding and Discipleship: Introduction
"Then I will give you shepherds after My own heart, who will feed you on knowledge and understanding.
And all the people gathered as one man at the square which was in front of the Water Gate, and they asked Ezra the scribe to bring the book of the law of Moses which the LORD had given to Israel.
(Nehemiah 8:1 NASB)The things which you have heard from me in the presence of many witnesses, entrust these to faithful men
who will be able to teach others also.
(The Apostle Paul, 2 Timothy 2:2 NASB)who will be able to teach others also.
"My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me;
(Jesus, John 10:27 NASB)like newborn babies, long for the pure milk of the word,
so that by it you may grow in respect to salvation,
(1 Peter 2:2 NASB)so that by it you may grow in respect to salvation,
For everyone who partakes only of milk is not accustomed to the word of righteousness, for he is an infant. But solid food is for the mature, who because of practice have their senses trained to discern good and evil.
(Hebrews 5:13-14 NASB)A Word of Explanation
First, let me explain the 'scripture barrage' at the beginning of each blog. My intent is to apply Colossians 3:16, namely to have God's word dwell in us as a foundation for discussion and our encouragement of one another. I desire the framework and reference point to be God's ideas and not mine. I trust you are on board with me on this!
Second, admittedly I am somewhat of an instigator on this blog. What do I mean by that? I often put broad and foundational topics on this blog, yet speak only briefly on them. It hardly seems fair, but my intent is to generate thought and discussion among you for further study, and, honestly, as a lay person time does not allow me to write a lengthier 'thesis' treatment I might otherwise enjoy doing.
'The Problem is Poor Discipleship'
This is a regular comment I hear from Christian friends regarding their local church, usually in the context of lack of spiritual growth of people or the lack of strength of leadership among the vocational pastors and elders. In this topic I would like to explore with you the meaning of discipleship and how we view the visible church (local congregations) in this regard.
